Survey Says: People More Likely to Trust Phil Than Tiger

An overwhelming percentage of people in the United States (98 percent) know who Tiger Woods is — duh! — but they consider him less trustworthy and to have less appeal than Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy and Bubba Watson.

Those are findings unearthed by Repucom, a global sports marketing and research company that quantifies the appeal (or lack thereof) of celebrities and athletes across categories including awareness, aspiration, influence, trendsetter and trust. The results of recent surveys were reported in the March 24 issue of Sports Illustrated.

Tiger was trusted by 44 percent of responders, which put him off the pace set by Phil Mickelson (69 percent), Adam Scott (68), Rory McIlroy (63) and Bubba Watson (63).

Apart from awareness, Tiger received his next highest mark in influence (60), followed by appeal (59), trendsetter (54) and aspiration (49).

Phil received the highest ranking of any of the five players for appeal (76), followed by aspiration (75), awareness (73), influence (72), and trendsetter (66).

Well, I don't know how Americans judge role models, but a role model to me (Danish) does not enjoy the fruits of growing up in a state (California as Phil did) and then complain about paying taxes when he is on top and threatening to leave the state!

I am a millionaire myself (though not three digits as Phil) with a middle class upgrowing, and I pay my taxes with pleasure. That's how it works, you enjoy the liberties of growing up in a civilized part of the world and you give back when you are on top.

Tiger is no role model either for cheating on his wife. None of them are role models. But they are amaazing golfers, the two of them. Tiger of course, being the next greatest golfer in history (after Nicklaus). I don't seek my role models in golfers or in musicians, but I love golf and music.

This survey ranks at the level of Keeping up with the Kardashians.

Here we go again with another SI - Golf.com "nobody likes Tiger" nonsense poll. Apparently the endorsers don't agree with these survey results. Tiger earned over $83 million last year, including $71 million in endorsements. Phil earned $52 million, and only $45 million in endorsements, being cast as the anti-Tiger. That amounts to $30 million more for Tiger. So don't waste our time with these stupid surveys. Every one already knows not to trust anything this site says about Tiger!

Why am I not surprise by this type of propaganda!  It's so important to keep people rile with ridiculous nonsense.

One thing is for certain. You can almost certainly trust that Adam Scott will blow up when crunch time comes.

What does this have to do with golf. Shouldn't this be a topic for an ethics forum?

Sorry to burst your bubble Mike. Only Jesus was perfect. Is Phil Jesus? No he doesn't cheat but he doesn't want to pay his taxes. We all have our faults and wear blinders. We can all aspire to be perfect but Romans 3:23 says all have sinned and fallen short of God's glory.

I support Tiger too Susan. I guess if you question Tiger you'd best question 3 million avid golf amateurs. I'm sure when it comes to keeping score I'm not 100 percent either!

Who has less credibility than this ridiculous survey?  Anyone dumb enough to publish it.

interesting survey, who has less credibility, Tiger or Obama? Pretty sure both would be in the single digits.

Yea, those same people are fickled. They'll be the same people jumping around kissing tiger's rear when he surpasses Jack's record. I don't see as many people tuning in when Phil wins.

Do I sense something odd about surveys such as these that intend to exploit a person's achievements into the open?

Look I do not even like Tiger, but shame on SI for publishing this crap. First of all if they are going to ask nebulous questions ( as many have said) who the F cares?  If you wish to ask a specific question regarding trust, tie it to golf, like: " Who is more likely to bend or break the rules on a golf course, Tiger or Phil". This question is worthy of :gotcha" journalism, and former SI editors must be sickened at the new breed of editors employed by this once venerable publication. PATHETIC.

Golf.com and SI seem to forget who has buttered their bread for the last 15 years. With no Tiger would golf be what and where it is?

Wow, why would a sport marketing company waste time and money on golf players? Nobody cares!

I really can see no reason to trust anyone mentioned in this article more than anyone else! Unless you know someone personally over many years, you can't know who to trust!

What a stupid post, who do I trust? I know neither of these men personally! And I'm sure few do. I have no need to trust them, trust them to do what? They are golf players (great ones I might add) their not running for public offices.

Phil is a role model no doubt. I like Tiger but the scandals hurt him.

I'd trust them both equally. Then again, they're both 2 of my golfing idols! Regardless of Tiger's past (which is no one's business), he's a changed man and deserving of trust and respect as always - not only for his impressive resume, but also his charity work. And Phil is as great as always, golf-wise and personally.

Mr Timothy D Naegele,  Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone. Do not paint yourself as lilywhite.

Tiger Woods is a great golfer, nothing more , nothing less. You have no business to judge him. Go look in the mirror first.

When was the survey administered?  What was the percentage of respondents completing surveys? What was the income level of respondents?  What was the level of education of respondents?  Ethnicity of respondents?  What was the percentage of male, female, transgender, gay, and lesbian respondents?  What was the sampling methodology?

Who is the golfer earning the most endorsement money worldwide?

What baloney is all this survey about?.  Haven't you all got better things to do than to conduct stupid surveys like this. Smacks of Bias and Racism. Tiger is serious when he plays , not like phil who wears a perpetual grin on his mask-like face.

i think he has proven that, despite the mariage scalde, that was hard,he went to#54 in the world ranking,he fought back and he is #1,he has a long way to go,unifortunately, injuries hinders his career,it is these injuries that this week he will lose the #1 ranking

Jack holds the edge in the majors, but Tiger is by far the best player in PGA Tour history. He wins more often and scores better than Jack by considerable margins.(http://sports.yahoo.com/news/tiger-woods-vs-jack-nicklaus-settling-best-time-214600044.html) you know nothing, jack was only good at majors, tiger has still long way to go but injuries hinders him,he has been number #1 longer than any other golfer in golfs history,do a bit of research guys, hate him or love,of course he can not match jack because he is better

Another worthless non-relative gossiping golf article to read.  Golf.com, you guys are going downhill with this obsession of posting articles that are more about gossip and not golf.  You guys should just go ahead and sign a contract with TMZ, so you can just cut the fat out and show what you're really all about.  Better yet, just sign with Fox News and just tag-team on some distasteful "hear-say" that would destroy the image of professional athletes.  Furthermore, I'm very disappointed in you Golf.com, once again, for the continuation of provoking these gullible-amateur-hackers into voicing their uneducated opinions, and not seeing that their degrading, insulting and judging comments that they've posted, are biting the hand that feeds them (Tiger Woods).  Numbers don't lie and any guy here reading this, that has been working in the golf industry for 20+ years (especially through the late 90s and early 00s), KNOWS that Tiger Woods is the reason for it being a 76 billion dollar industry now days.  Do your research.

Susan, you are so wrong.  Tiger is the king of fake.  Pre-scandal,  he set himself up as a man of integrity, honesty, character... all false lies to fool the public and eek out more endorsement money.  Tiger was even fake with his mistresses in that he led many of them to believe they were the only won that he was cheating on his wife with.  And he made them think that his marriage was a sham.  Charles Barkley may be "what you see is what you get" but not Tiger Woods who wanted to live one way but get respect for living another.

On the other hand I think Phil is as real as most people.  I've had the opportunity to observe him between the ropes after tourneys as he interacted with friends and his wife.  I think Tiger and a group of Tiger associates set Phil up to be fake because he smiled, and signed autographs, and was generous with his money--the anti-Tiger.  They said this could not be real and got other people to "hate Phil" and created rumors about him.

To those complaining about Phil's political statement about soaking the rich with taxes, I say, "Thank You Phil"  I'm far from rich but I am growing really concerned about the discrimination toward the rich (progressive tax is a form of discrimination) and the animosity toward the rich (heard in the last 5 or so State of the Union Addresses).  Are we in Stalin's Russia or what?  What's so bad about being successful and making money from doing so as long as you do it honestly?  Last I heard more jobs were created in America by rich people than poor people.  Maybe we need a few more rich people so we can reduce the number of poor people.

You don't even know Tiger and you trust him??? Why don't you ask Elin about trust?? Tiger is a POS and deserves everything he has earned in the last 4-5 years including injuries. Rest easy Jack, your record is notin jeopardy
